For the body system: Male Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Nettle (commonly referring to Urtica dioica, or stinging nettle) has a modest body of scientific and traditional evidence supporting its use in the male reproductive system, particularly relating to prostate health. In traditional herbal medicine, nettle root has long been used to help manage urinary issues in men, often attributed to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland.
Modern scientific studies suggest that nettle root extracts may help alleviate lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH. The proposed mechanism involves inhibition of sex hormone-binding globulin and interference with enzymes such as aromatase and 5-alpha reductase, which are involved in the metabolism of testosterone. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses (e.g., Safarinejad 2005; Nahas & Mohan 2020) have reported statistically significant improvements in urinary symptoms compared to placebo, but the effects are modest and the quality of evidence is moderate.
There is less robust evidence for any direct effect of nettle on fertility, libido, or other aspects of male reproductive function beyond prostate health. Most clinical research focuses on urinary flow, nocturia, and related symptoms. Overall, while there is some scientific support for nettle's use in supporting aspects of the male reproductive system (specifically prostate health), the evidence is not strong enough to warrant high confidence, and more large-scale, high-quality studies are needed.
