Pedalium murex, commonly known as "Pedalium" or "Large Caltrops," is a plant widely used in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. It has a historical reputation as an aphrodisiac and as a remedy for various male reproductive issues, including sexual weakness, low libido, and infertility. The seeds and whole plant are often incorporated into herbal formulations aimed at supporting male vitality and reproductive health. Traditional texts describe its use for improving spermatogenesis, enhancing sexual performance, and treating disorders like spermatorrhea and erectile dysfunction.

However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is relatively limited. Some in vivo and in vitro studies have indicated that Pedalium extracts may have androgenic effects, potentially increasing testosterone levels or improving sperm parameters in animal models. A few studies suggest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically benefit reproductive health. Nonetheless, rigorous human clinical trials are lacking, and most research is preliminary, often with small sample sizes or conducted on animals.

In summary, Pedalium’s use for supporting the male reproductive system is primarily justified by longstanding traditional use, with only modest scientific support to date. More comprehensive clinical trials are needed to substantiate efficacy and safety in humans.
