Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sarsaparilla (Smilax spp.) has a longstanding history in traditional medicine systems, including those of Central and South America, where it has been used as a general tonic, for skin conditions, and sometimes to support male vitality or reproductive health. Traditional uses often cite sarsaparilla as an "aphrodisiac" or as an agent to improve virility and libido, but these claims are based on folklore and anecdotal reports rather than controlled scientific studies. Modern research into sarsaparilla's effects on the male reproductive system is extremely limited. While sarsaparilla contains plant sterols and saponins, which are sometimes claimed to have hormone-modulating properties, there is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating an effect on testosterone levels, sperm quality, or reproductive function in humans. Most references to its use for male reproductive health are based on tradition rather than data from well-designed human studies. Therefore, while it is accurate to say that sarsaparilla has been used traditionally for this purpose, scientific validation for these claims is lacking.
