Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis), also known as "five-flavor berry," has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other Asian healing systems. Traditionally, Schisandra is considered to support vitality, stamina, and reproductive health, including male sexual function. In TCM, it is thought to "tonify the kidneys," which are associated with sexual energy and reproductive capacity. Historical texts and herbal compendiums often list Schisandra as an ingredient in formulas intended to enhance male reproductive health, increase semen production, and improve sexual performance.

However, while there is strong ethnobotanical and traditional documentation of its use for male reproductive support, modern scientific studies are limited. Some preclinical animal research suggests that Schisandra extracts may influence testosterone levels, sperm motility, or fertility, but evidence in humans is lacking or inconclusive. Most clinical studies focus on Schisandra’s adaptogenic, hepatoprotective, or antioxidant properties rather than direct effects on the male reproductive system. As such, the justification for its use in this context is primarily traditional, with limited corroborating scientific evidence presently available.
