Sesame (Sesamum indicum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for supporting male reproductive health. Historically, sesame seeds and oil have been considered to help boost vitality, improve sexual function, and support sperm health. In Ayurveda, sesame is believed to be nourishing and strengthening to the reproductive tissues (Shukra dhatu), and is sometimes recommended for men experiencing issues related to fertility or libido. However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. Some animal studies suggest possible benefits of sesame or its lignans (such as sesamin) on sperm parameters and hormone levels, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. The traditional use is the primary justification for associating sesame with male reproductive health, rather than strong scientific validation. Overall, while sesame is rich in nutrients like zinc, vitamin E, and lignans—components that may theoretically benefit reproductive health—the evidence in humans is preliminary and not conclusive. Therefore, its reputation for supporting the male reproductive system is rooted mainly in tradition rather than being solidly established by contemporary scientific research.
