Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Shilajit, a mineral-rich substance found in the Himalayas and other mountain ranges, has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for supporting male reproductive health, particularly for enhancing fertility, libido, and vitality. Scientifically, several studies have investigated Shilajit’s effects on the male reproductive system. Clinical research indicates that purified Shilajit supplementation may lead to improvements in sperm count, sperm motility, and levels of total and free testosterone in healthy adult males and men with infertility.

A notable randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Andrologia (2010) found that men given 250 mg of purified Shilajit twice daily for 90 days experienced significant improvements in sperm parameters and serum testosterone compared to placebo. The active compounds in Shilajit, such as fulvic acid and various minerals, are thought to contribute to its antioxidant and adaptogenic properties, potentially reducing oxidative stress in the testes and supporting hormonal balance.

Despite promising results, limitations include relatively small sample sizes, short study durations, and variability in product purity. Further large-scale, long-term studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Overall, while traditional use is robust, moderate scientific evidence supports Shilajit’s role in male reproductive health, warranting a rating of 3 out of 5.
