Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Suma (Pfaffia paniculata), also known as "Brazilian ginseng," has a long history of traditional use in South America, especially within Brazilian folk medicine. It is commonly referred to as an adaptogen and tonic, believed to enhance overall vitality and stamina. In the context of the male reproductive system, suma root has been used traditionally as an aphrodisiac and to support male sexual health, libido, and physical performance. These uses are largely based on traditional practices and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific validation.

Some preclinical studies suggest that compounds in suma, such as ecdysteroids (notably ecdysterone), may have effects on hormone balance, libido, and even spermatogenesis in animal models. However, these studies are limited in scope and quality, and there is a lack of well-designed human clinical trials to support any definitive claims. No major regulatory or scientific bodies endorse suma for male reproductive health based on current evidence. Thus, while suma is used for this purpose in traditional medicine, scientific validation remains limited, and most claims rely on historical use rather than robust clinical data.
