Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

There is scientific evidence supporting the use of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, in supporting aspects of the male reproductive system. Studies have shown that these fatty acids are key structural components of sperm cell membranes and are involved in maintaining membrane fluidity, which is crucial for sperm motility and function. Research indicates that dietary supplementation with unsaturated fatty acids, especially omega-3s (such as EPA and DHA), can improve sperm count, motility, and morphology in some infertile men. Additionally, unsaturated fatty acids possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may help protect sperm from oxidative damage, a key factor in male infertility.

However, while several clinical trials and observational studies suggest a beneficial effect, results are not entirely consistent. Some studies show significant improvements in semen parameters, while others find minimal or no effect. Meta-analyses generally conclude that omega-3 supplementation may improve certain semen parameters but call for more rigorous, large-scale studies to establish clear clinical benefits. Overall, the scientific evidence is moderate (rated 3/5) and justifies the use of unsaturated fatty acids as a supportive measure for male reproductive health, particularly in cases of subfertility, but does not yet support their use as a primary or standalone treatment.
