Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in male reproductive health, with a growing body of scientific literature supporting its importance. Several studies have demonstrated that vitamin D receptors and metabolizing enzymes are present in male reproductive tissues, including the testes, prostate, and sperm. Observational studies suggest that men with adequate vitamin D levels tend to have higher testosterone concentrations compared to those who are deficient. Randomized controlled trials have shown mixed but generally positive results: some have reported that vitamin D supplementation can increase testosterone levels in men with low baseline levels, while others have found no significant effect. Additionally, vitamin D deficiency is associated with decreased sperm motility and lower fertility rates, although causality has not been definitively established. Animal studies also indicate that vitamin D is required for normal spermatogenesis and reproductive function.

While there is not yet universal consensus or large-scale clinical trial evidence strong enough to warrant vitamin D as a treatment for male reproductive issues, the existing scientific data provide moderate support for its role in maintaining hormonal balance and fertility in men, particularly in those who are deficient. Because vitamin D insufficiency is common and correcting it is relatively safe, supplementation is often justified in men with low levels and concerns about reproductive health.
