Evidence supporting the use of: Walnut
For the body system: Male Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Walnuts (Juglans regia) have been used in various traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, as a food believed to support male reproductive health. In these systems, walnuts are often consumed to enhance vitality, increase sperm count, and improve sexual function. The shape of the walnut, which resembles the human testicle, also led to its association with male reproductive health in the doctrine of signatures—a historical belief that herbs resembling certain body parts could treat ailments of those parts.
Modern scientific evidence on the effects of walnuts specifically on the male reproductive system is limited but growing. Some small-scale clinical studies have shown that walnut supplementation may improve sperm vitality, motility, and morphology in healthy men, likely due to their high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. However, these findings are preliminary, and the sample sizes are small. The traditional use of walnuts for male reproductive health is much more established than the scientific validation, which is why the evidence rating is moderate. More rigorous and larger-scale studies are needed to confirm these effects and to fully understand the mechanisms involved.
