For the health condition: Mastitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arisaema cum bile is a traditional Chinese medicinal preparation composed of Arisaema (the tuber of Arisaema erubescens or related species) processed with animal bile. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this ingredient—often called "Dan Nan Xing"—has been used for centuries to treat various conditions, including phlegm-related disorders, convulsions, and inflammatory processes. Mastitis, characterized by inflammation of the breast tissue, is sometimes treated with Arisaema cum bile in TCM, based on its purported abilities to "clear heat," "transform phlegm," and relieve swelling and pain.
However, the evidence supporting its use for mastitis is primarily anecdotal and rooted in traditional practice rather than rigorous scientific study. Historical TCM texts mention formulas containing Arisaema cum bile for "breast abscess" or "breast swelling," conditions that may correspond to mastitis. Modern scientific literature provides very limited, if any, clinical evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for mastitis. Some pharmacological studies have shown that Arisaema species possess anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in animal models, but these findings have not been translated into well-controlled clinical trials for mastitis. Thus, its use for this condition remains based on tradition, with a low level of supporting evidence.
