Evidence supporting the use of: Centella triterpenes
For the health condition: Memory and Brain Function
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Centella triterpenes, the primary active compounds in Centella asiatica (also known as Gotu Kola), have a history of traditional use in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for enhancing cognitive function and memory. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to investigate these claims. Preclinical research, primarily in animal models, indicates that Centella triterpenes (such as asiaticoside, madecassoside, and asiatic acid) may exert neuroprotective effects. These include antioxidative activity, promotion of neurite outgrowth, and reduction of beta-amyloid deposition, which is relevant to Alzheimer's disease models. Several rodent studies have reported improvements in learning and memory tasks following administration of Centella extracts or isolated triterpenes.
Human clinical trials, though limited and often small in scale, have produced some encouraging results. A few placebo-controlled studies have found that Centella asiatica extracts may improve aspects of cognitive function and mood in elderly subjects or individuals with cognitive impairment. However, methodological limitations, small sample sizes, and lack of standardization of extracts mean that evidence is not yet robust. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while Centella triterpenes show promise for supporting memory and brain function, larger and better-designed clinical trials are warranted to establish efficacy and safety.
In summary, there is a scientific basis, mostly from animal and preliminary human studies, for the use of Centella triterpenes in supporting memory and brain function, but evidence is moderate (rated 3/5) and not yet conclusive.
