Coffee fruit (also known as coffee cherry) is the fleshy outer portion of the coffee plant's fruit, distinct from the coffee bean itself. In recent years, extracts from coffee fruit have been marketed as cognitive enhancers, purportedly supporting memory and overall brain function. This interest is based primarily on a handful of preliminary scientific studies. Notably, a 2013 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Food & Nutrition Sciences found that a single dose of whole coffee fruit concentrate acutely increased levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in healthy adults. BDNF is a protein associated with neuroplasticity, learning, and memory. Additional small studies suggest that coffee fruit extract may modestly improve certain aspects of cognitive performance, such as reaction time or executive function, compared to placebo.

However, the body of evidence is limited—most studies are small, short-term, and often funded by supplement manufacturers. There are no large, long-term clinical trials demonstrating a meaningful impact on memory or prevention of cognitive decline. Traditional medicinal use of coffee fruit for brain health is not documented; this is a relatively new application based on emerging science, not traditional herbalism. In summary, while there is some early scientific validation for coffee fruit’s impact on markers like BDNF and limited cognitive measures, the evidence is preliminary and insufficient to conclusively support its use for memory or brain function enhancement.
