The scientific rationale is based on vitamin E’s antioxidant properties, which are thought to help protect neurons from oxidative stress—a key contributor to cognitive decline and neurodegeneration.
Some clinical studies have explored vitamin E supplementation in individuals with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. A notable randomized controlled trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2005) found that high-dose vitamin E (2000 IU/day) slowed the progression of functional decline compared to placebo. However, other studies have failed to demonstrate significant cognitive benefits in healthy older adults or those with mild cognitive impairment. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally suggest that vitamin E may offer modest benefits in specific populations with established neurodegenerative disease, but not as a preventive or general cognitive enhancer.
It is important to note that high doses of vitamin E may carry risks, including increased bleeding tendency, and should only be used under medical supervision.
