Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) have garnered scientific interest for their potential to support memory and brain function, primarily in the context of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. MCTs are rapidly metabolized in the liver to produce ketone bodies, which can serve as an alternative energy source for the brain when glucose metabolism is impaired—a hallmark seen in Alzheimer's and other cognitive disorders. Several small clinical studies and pilot trials have investigated MCT supplementation, particularly caprylic acid (C8), in individuals with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. Some studies have reported modest improvements in memory and cognitive function, especially among those with certain genetic profiles (e.g., APOE4-negative individuals). However, the overall evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes conflicting results. MCTs are not a traditional remedy for memory loss, and their use is rooted in modern nutritional science rather than historical practices. While the mechanism—providing ketones as alternative brain fuel—is plausible and supported by preclinical research, large-scale, long-term clinical trials are needed to establish definitive benefits and optimal usage. Thus, MCTs show scientific promise, but current evidence is rated moderate to low (2/5) for supporting their use in memory and brain function.
