Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid found in high concentrations in the brain and plays a key role in cell membrane function and neuronal signaling. Its use for supporting memory and brain function is supported by some scientific evidence, though the strength of the evidence is moderate and not definitive. Several clinical trials in older adults have shown that PS supplementation (typically 100-300 mg daily) may improve cognitive parameters such as memory, attention, and mental processing speed, particularly in individuals with mild cognitive impairment or age-related cognitive decline. For example, a 1991 double-blind trial published in Neurology found that PS improved memory and learning in elderly patients with cognitive impairment. However, many of the early studies used PS derived from bovine cortex, which is no longer widely available due to safety concerns; more recent studies with soy-derived PS have shown similar but less robust effects.

A 2010 systematic review (J Clin Biochem Nutr) concluded that PS supplementation appears to have a modest benefit for memory, but emphasized that larger, longer-term trials are needed. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has stated that the evidence is insufficient to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between PS and cognitive function in the general population. Overall, while PS is not a miracle solution, it is one of the better-studied dietary supplements for brain health, with moderate scientific support for its use in memory and cognitive decline, especially in older adults.
