Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

"Balsam" is a term that can refer to various resinous substances derived from certain trees and shrubs, such as Balsam of Peru, Balsam fir, or Balm of Gilead. In the context of menopause, there is historical and traditional use of certain balsams—most notably Balm of Gilead (from Populus species)—in folk medicine for their purported soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditional herbalists sometimes used preparations containing balsam for women experiencing menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, irritability, or general discomfort. However, these uses were based on empirical knowledge and anecdotal reports, rather than controlled studies.

There is little to no scientific evidence to validate the efficacy of balsam for menopausal symptoms. Modern clinical research does not support its use for this indication, and it is not recognized in established medical guidelines for menopause management. Most references to balsam in menopause are found in herbalist texts or ethnobotanical sources, rather than peer-reviewed scientific literature. Therefore, while there is a weak tradition of its use in this context, the evidence base is extremely limited.
