Bioflavonoids, a class of plant-derived compounds found in fruits and vegetables, have been traditionally used to support various aspects of women's health, including menopause. Their use in menopause is primarily based on their purported antioxidant and mild estrogenic activities, as well as their ability to strengthen blood vessel walls and reduce capillary fragility. Historically, bioflavonoids have been included in supplements aimed at alleviating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and circulatory discomfort. However, while there is some anecdotal and traditional support, the scientific evidence specifically linking bioflavonoids (unspecified types) to effective management of menopausal symptoms remains limited and inconclusive. Most clinical studies focus on specific bioflavonoids, such as hesperidin or rutin, but these studies are few, often small, or methodologically weak. The proposed mechanisms, such as antioxidant support and weak estrogen receptor modulation, have not been robustly validated in large-scale human trials. Therefore, while bioflavonoids are traditionally used for menopause support, this use is not strongly supported by high-quality scientific research, and their efficacy for this purpose remains uncertain.
