Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bupleurum, a genus of plants commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is primarily justified for menopause support based on traditional use rather than robust scientific evidence. In TCM, Bupleurum (often as part of multi-herb formulas such as Xiao Yao San or Chai Hu Shu Gan San) is used to "soothe the liver," regulate qi, and address symptoms associated with hormonal imbalance and emotional disturbances, some of which overlap with menopausal symptoms (e.g., irritability, mood swings, hot flashes). However, scientific validation for Bupleurum's effectiveness in treating menopause-specific symptoms is minimal. Few clinical trials directly examine Bupleurum or its extracts for menopause, and most available studies use complex herbal mixtures, making it difficult to isolate Bupleurum's effects. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest Bupleurum’s saponins may have anti-inflammatory or neuroprotective effects, but direct application to menopause management in humans is not established. Therefore, while Bupleurum has a longstanding traditional role in managing symptoms that may overlap with menopause, strong scientific evidence for its use specifically for menopause is lacking.
