Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) has a long history of traditional use for a wide range of ailments, including digestive complaints, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. In the context of menopause, its use is primarily based on tradition and anecdotal evidence rather than robust scientific research. Herbalists and traditional medicine practitioners sometimes recommend chamomile for menopausal symptoms such as insomnia, irritability, mood swings, and mild anxiety due to its reputed calming and mild sedative effects. However, there is little direct clinical evidence specifically supporting German chamomile for treating or supporting menopause or its most common symptoms (such as hot flashes or hormonal regulation). Most studies involving chamomile focus on its general anxiolytic and sedative properties, and only a few small studies have evaluated its effect on sleep or anxiety in peri- or postmenopausal women, with inconclusive or modest results. Thus, while its use is rooted in tradition, the strength of evidence for its effectiveness in menopause is low, and more research is needed to clarify its role for this indication.
