Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a history of use in traditional medicine, including for menopausal symptoms. More recently, scientific interest has focused on its potential for alleviating menopause-related complaints, such as hot flashes and mood disturbances.

Several studies have investigated licorice root’s effects on menopause. Licorice contains phytoestrogens—plant-derived compounds structurally similar to estrogen. These phytoestrogens are believed to exert weak estrogen-like activity in the body, which may help counteract the decline in endogenous estrogen that occurs during menopause. In a few small clinical trials, licorice root extracts have demonstrated some efficacy in reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes compared to placebo or hormone therapy, though results are mixed and not universally positive.

Licorice root also exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may contribute to overall symptom relief. However, its use is limited by potential side effects, particularly with long-term or high-dose use, due to its glycyrrhizin content. Glycyrrhizin can cause hypertension, hypokalemia, and other adverse effects.

In summary, there is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting that licorice root may modestly reduce menopausal symptoms, especially hot flashes, but the quality and quantity of evidence are limited. More rigorous, large-scale clinical trials are needed. Traditional use also underpins its application, but scientific validation is still emerging; thus, evidence strength is rated as 2 out of 5.
