Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Macamides are bioactive compounds found in the root of the maca plant (Lepidium meyenii), which has a long history of traditional use in the Andean region of Peru. Maca root has been consumed for centuries as a food and traditional remedy, including for women's health and to help manage menopause-related symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and fatigue. However, the tradition is based on the use of whole maca root or its preparations, rather than isolated macamides. While maca is reputed in traditional medicine to support menopausal women, direct scientific evidence specific to macamides and menopause is limited. Some modern studies have investigated maca extract (which contains macamides among other constituents) for menopausal symptom relief, showing potential benefits, but these studies are often small, use whole root or extracts rather than purified macamides, and do not establish causality or mechanism. Thus, while there is a traditional basis for the use of maca in menopause, and macamides are part of its chemical profile, there is currently insufficient direct scientific evidence to support the use of macamides alone for menopause.
