Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Phytoestrol is a term often used to refer to plant-derived compounds that have estrogen-like activity, more properly called phytoestrogens. These include isoflavones (found in soy), lignans (found in flaxseed), and coumestans. The use of phytoestrogens to support or treat menopausal symptoms is justified by a moderate body of scientific evidence. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses suggest that certain phytoestrogens, particularly soy isoflavones, can have a modest effect in reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes in menopausal women. However, results are mixed and the magnitude of benefit appears to be less than that of conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Phytoestrogens are thought to exert their effects by binding to estrogen receptors, although they are much weaker than endogenous estrogens. Some studies also indicate potential benefits for bone health and cardiovascular risk factors, but the evidence in these areas is less consistent. Overall, scientific consensus acknowledges a potential role for phytoestrogens in managing mild menopausal symptoms, but not as a substitute for HRT in women with severe symptoms. Safety is generally good, but long-term effects are not completely understood. Importantly, "phytoestrol" as a generic, unspecified ingredient is too broad, and efficacy depends on the specific type and dose of phytoestrogen used.
