Evidence supporting the use of: Red-Rooted Sage
For the health condition: Menopause
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Red-Rooted Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), also known as Danshen, is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, and supporting cardiovascular health. Its use for menopause is mainly rooted in traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In TCM, menopause is often viewed as a natural transition associated with changes in "yin" and "yang," and herbs like Red-Rooted Sage may be prescribed to address symptoms believed to arise from blood stasis or poor circulation. Some TCM practitioners recommend Danshen in combination with other herbs to help alleviate menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, irritability, and insomnia, based on the traditional understanding of body balance.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited direct research supporting the use of Red-Rooted Sage specifically for menopause or its hallmark symptoms. Most studies focus on its cardiovascular benefits, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. There is some preliminary evidence that Salvia miltiorrhiza extracts may modulate hormone levels or exert mild estrogenic effects in animal models, but clinical trials in menopausal women are lacking. Therefore, while there is a traditional basis for its use, the scientific evidence remains weak and insufficient to recommend Red-Rooted Sage as a primary therapy for menopause.
