Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Soy protein is used to support menopause symptoms primarily due to its content of isoflavones, which are plant-derived phytoestrogens. These compounds, particularly genistein and daidzein, have a chemical structure similar to human estrogen and can exert mild estrogenic effects in the body. Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have examined the efficacy of soy isoflavones in alleviating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. Evidence suggests that soy isoflavones can result in a modest reduction in the frequency and severity of hot flashes, though effects are generally less pronounced than those observed with hormone replacement therapy.

The North American Menopause Society and other expert bodies acknowledge that soy isoflavones may provide some benefit for vasomotor symptoms, but emphasize that the magnitude of benefit is variable and not all women respond to treatment. Additionally, not all soy protein supplements contain standardized amounts of isoflavones, and individual metabolism of these compounds (such as the ability to produce equol) may influence effectiveness. Overall, while there is scientific validation for soy protein’s use in menopause symptom management, the strength of evidence supports only a mild to moderate benefit, leading to a rating of 3 out of 5.
