Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is primarily used for menstrual irregularity based on traditional and anecdotal practices rather than solid scientific validation. Historically, ACV has been a part of folk remedies for a range of conditions, including digestive issues, weight management, and some women’s health concerns such as menstrual irregularity. The traditional belief is that ACV can help "balance hormones" or "detoxify" the body, which may influence menstrual cycles. However, there is very limited scientific research specifically examining the direct effects of ACV on menstrual irregularity.

A single small study published in 2013 in Togo et al., 2013, Journal of Functional Foods found that daily intake of ACV (15 mL per day) appeared to restore ovulatory menstruation in a small group of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, this study had a very small sample size (n=7), lacked a control group, and its findings have not been replicated or supported by larger, higher-quality trials. No robust clinical evidence exists for the use of ACV in women without PCOS or for general menstrual irregularity. Overall, while ACV's use in this context is rooted in tradition and limited anecdotal reports, scientific evidence is weak and insufficient to support its effectiveness for treating menstrual irregularity.
