Evidence supporting the use of: Corktree
For the health condition: Menstrual Irregularity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
The use of "Corktree"—most commonly referring to Phellodendron amurense (Amur cork tree) or Phellodendron chinense—to support or treat menstrual irregularity is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, particularly within the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, the bark of the Corktree, known as "Huang Bai," is used to clear heat and dampness, and is sometimes included in formulas aimed at addressing gynecological issues, including irregular menstruation. However, its primary indications are more often for conditions such as infections, inflammation, or "damp-heat" syndromes, rather than specifically for menstrual irregularity.
There is very limited scientific research directly evaluating the efficacy of Corktree (Phellodendron species) for the treatment of menstrual irregularity. Most of the available evidence is historical and anecdotal, based on centuries of use in herbal traditions. Modern pharmacological studies on Phellodendron focus on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-tumor properties, with little to no direct investigation into its effects on female reproductive health or menstrual cycles. Therefore, while it may appear in some traditional formulas for women's health, its use for menstrual irregularity is not substantiated by robust clinical evidence. The evidence rating is therefore low, reflecting a reliance on tradition rather than scientific validation.
