Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Corydalis (primarily Corydalis yanhusuo) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is commonly employed to address various types of pain, including menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) and irregular menstrual cycles. In TCM theory, Corydalis is said to "invigorate the blood" and "move qi," actions believed to help regulate menstruation and alleviate associated symptoms. Several classical texts and modern TCM practitioners list Corydalis as an ingredient in formulas for menstrual irregularity, often in combination with other herbs.
However, scientific studies specifically investigating Corydalis for menstrual irregularity are limited. Most pharmacological research on Corydalis has focused on its analgesic and sedative properties, primarily attributed to the alkaloid tetrahydropalmatine (THP). While these studies suggest it may help relieve menstrual pain, there is little direct evidence regarding its effects on the regularity or regulation of the menstrual cycle itself. Overall, its use for menstrual irregularity is justified mainly by traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation.
