Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Five-leaf Chastetree (Vitex negundo) is traditionally used in various systems of medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani, to support women's reproductive health and to address menstrual irregularities. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys indicate that different preparations of the plant, such as leaf decoctions and extracts, have been recommended for regulating menstrual cycles, alleviating dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and addressing other gynecological complaints.

However, while Vitex agnus-castus (Chaste Tree or Monk's Pepper) has been more extensively studied and has some clinical support for its use in menstrual disorders, Vitex negundo (Five-leaf Chastetree) has comparatively limited scientific research focused specifically on menstrual irregularity. Most of the available evidence supporting its use is based on traditional knowledge, anecdotal reports, and a handful of animal studies suggesting possible estrogenic or anti-inflammatory activities.

There is a lack of robust clinical trials or systematic reviews validating the efficacy of Five-leaf Chastetree for menstrual irregularities in humans. Therefore, its use for this purpose remains primarily grounded in traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation.
