Evidence supporting the use of: Macaenes
For the health condition: Menstrual Irregularity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Macaenes refers to bioactive compounds found in Lepidium meyenii, commonly known as maca. Maca root has a long history of traditional use in the Andes, particularly for enhancing fertility, stamina, and hormonal balance in women. Historical accounts and ethnobotanical surveys report that women in Peru have used maca to help regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate symptoms related to menstrual irregularity. The traditional use is primarily based on anecdotal evidence and long-term empirical use rather than on controlled scientific studies.
From a scientific perspective, there is only limited research specifically examining macaenes’ effects on menstrual irregularity. Some small clinical trials and animal studies have explored maca’s potential to modulate sex hormone levels and improve reproductive health, but these studies often do not isolate macaenes as the active components and rarely focus directly on menstrual irregularity. Systematic reviews of the literature conclude that while maca root may have some effect on hormonal parameters, there is insufficient high-quality evidence to confirm its efficacy in treating menstrual irregularity. Therefore, the use of macaenes for this condition is largely justified by traditional practices, with minimal scientific validation available to date.
