Evidence supporting the use of: Potentilla
For the health condition: Menstrual Irregularity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Potentilla species, commonly known as cinquefoils, have a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine across Europe and Asia. For menstrual irregularities, particularly excessive menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), certain Potentilla species—most notably Potentilla anserina (silverweed)—have been employed as folk remedies. Traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys report the use of Potentilla infusions or decoctions to help regulate menstrual flow, reduce cramping, and alleviate heavy bleeding. The presumed mechanism is attributed to the astringent properties of tannins present in the plant, which are thought to constrict tissues and reduce bleeding. However, the evidence for these uses is primarily anecdotal and based on historical accounts, with little in the way of controlled clinical trials or rigorous pharmacological studies to validate efficacy or safety for menstrual irregularity specifically. Scientific literature provides only limited support, often extrapolated from the general astringency and anti-inflammatory effects observed in vitro or in animal studies. Thus, the use of Potentilla for menstrual irregularity is justified mainly by tradition rather than robust scientific evidence.
