For the health condition: Menstrual Irregularity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sanguisorba, commonly known as burnet, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Chinese and European practices. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Sanguisorba officinalis (known as Di Yu) is frequently employed to "cool the blood" and stop various forms of bleeding, including excessive menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia). Historical texts and pharmacopoeias describe its astringent properties, attributing its effectiveness to tannins and other polyphenolic compounds present in the root. In European herbal traditions, Sanguisorba has also been used for its astringent effects, though its application for menstrual irregularities is less common than in TCM. Despite its traditional use, scientific validation is limited. Few modern clinical studies have specifically investigated the efficacy of Sanguisorba for treating menstrual irregularity. Most evidence is anecdotal or based on historical usage rather than systematic research. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that compounds in Sanguisorba may have hemostatic (bleeding-reducing) and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically support its traditional use, but these findings have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials for menstrual issues. Therefore, while traditional use is well documented, high-quality scientific evidence remains insufficient to fully substantiate its efficacy for menstrual irregularity.
