Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Achyranthes bidentata, known as "Niu Xi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for gynecological disorders, including scant menstruation (oligomenorrhea). In TCM theory, Niu Xi is understood to invigorate blood circulation, remove blood stasis, and direct blood flow downward, which is thought to regulate menstrual cycles and increase menstrual flow. Multiple classical herbal texts—including the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and "Compendium of Materia Medica"—recommend its use for menstrual irregularities, particularly those characterized by insufficient or delayed periods. However, modern scientific research directly validating Achyranthes bidentata for scant menstruation is limited. Some pharmacological studies suggest the herb contains saponins and other compounds that may promote uterine contractions or improve pelvic blood flow in animal models, which could theoretically address scant menses. Yet, clinical trials in humans for this specific indication are sparse or of low methodological quality. As a result, while the herb's use for supporting menstruation is well-established in traditional practice, high-quality scientific evidence remains lacking. The rating reflects the strong traditional basis and limited but suggestive preclinical evidence, but absence of robust clinical data.
