1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) is an iminosugar primarily found in mulberry leaves (Morus alba). Its use in relation to Metabolic Syndrome is grounded in scientific research rather than traditional medicine. DNJ is a potent inhibitor of intestinal α-glucosidases, enzymes responsible for breaking down complex carbohydrates into glucose for absorption. By inhibiting these enzymes, DNJ reduces postprandial (after-meal) blood glucose spikes, a key factor in managing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

Clinical studies, including small randomized controlled trials, have shown that DNJ-containing mulberry leaf extracts can lower postprandial glucose and insulin levels in humans. For example, trials published in journals such as Diabetes Care and Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition have demonstrated modest improvements in glycemic control after DNJ supplementation. Animal studies further support DNJ's potential to improve lipid profiles and reduce insulin resistance, both relevant to metabolic syndrome. However, data on long-term efficacy and safety in humans remain limited, and most studies have been short-term or used small sample sizes.

While DNJ is not a mainstream pharmaceutical, its mechanism and early clinical findings provide a scientific rationale for its use in supporting metabolic health.
