7-Keto (7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone-acetate) is a metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Its use in supporting or treating metabolic syndrome is based on some scientific rationale and preliminary research, though the evidence is limited and not robust. Several small clinical studies have explored its potential benefits in weight management, a core component of metabolic syndrome. For instance, a few randomized controlled trials have suggested that 7-Keto supplementation may increase resting metabolic rate and promote greater weight and fat loss when combined with calorie restriction and exercise. This effect is hypothesized to occur through increased thermogenesis and modulation of key metabolic pathways. However, direct studies on 7-Keto’s effect on other metabolic syndrome parameters—such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, or hypertension—are scarce or inconclusive.

The mechanism of action proposed involves enhancement of thyroid hormone activity and upregulation of thermogenic enzymes, without converting to sex hormones like DHEA. Safety data is relatively reassuring in the short term, with few adverse effects reported. Despite these encouraging findings, the overall quality and quantity of evidence remain modest, leading to a low to moderate rating (2/5). Most major medical organizations do not recommend 7-Keto as a standard therapy for metabolic syndrome. More rigorous, longer-term trials are needed to establish its efficacy and safety for this use.
