Several scientific studies support the potential role of Alaska Blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum and related species) in managing aspects of metabolic syndrome, though the overall evidence is moderate and not yet definitive. Blueberries, including Alaska varieties, are rich in polyphenols—particularly anthocyanins—which have been shown in animal and human studies to improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood pressure, and reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, all of which are relevant to metabolic syndrome. Key randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses (typically using cultivated Vaccinium species but sometimes including wild types) have demonstrated improvements in markers such as fasting glucose, LDL cholesterol, and endothelial function following blueberry supplementation.
While the majority of research has focused on commonly available (cultivated) blueberries, the phytochemical profiles of Alaska wild blueberries are similar and sometimes superior in anthocyanin content. Traditional use of Alaska Blueberry by Indigenous peoples has primarily centered on general health and nutrition rather than specifically for metabolic syndrome. Therefore, the justification for use is primarily scientific rather than traditional. However, limitations in study size, heterogeneity of blueberry preparations, and lack of long-term outcome data prevent a higher evidence rating. More research—particularly using Alaska-specific varieties and in populations with metabolic syndrome—is warranted.
