Algal oil is primarily used as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which has been studied for its role in supporting cardiovascular and metabolic health. The justification for algal oil in metabolic syndrome is rooted in modern scientific research rather than traditional use. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that omega-3 fatty acids, including those derived from algal oil, can improve lipid profiles by lowering triglyceride levels and may exert beneficial effects on blood pressure and inflammation, all of which are components of metabolic syndrome. Specifically, algal oil provides a plant-based alternative to fish oil, delivering comparable doses of DHA, and sometimes eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), without the risk of ocean-borne contaminants. Meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials have shown that omega-3 supplementation can reduce triglyceride levels and may help improve other markers of metabolic syndrome, although the evidence for effects on insulin sensitivity and waist circumference is less robust. Algal oil is particularly valuable for vegetarians and those with fish allergies. However, most studies to date use fish-derived omega-3s, and while algal oil is chemically similar, direct research on algal oil in metabolic syndrome populations is more limited. Thus, the evidence supporting algal oil for metabolic syndrome is moderate (rated 3), with promising mechanistic support but a relative lack of direct large-scale studies using algal oil itself.
