Scientific studies suggest that oxidative stress contributes to the development and progression of metabolic syndrome, providing a rationale for antioxidant interventions. Some clinical trials and observational studies have reported that supplementation with specific antioxidants—such as vitamin C, vitamin E, alpha-lipoic acid, and polyphenols—may improve certain metabolic parameters, such as insulin sensitivity or lipid profiles. However, results are inconsistent and often limited by study design, small sample sizes, and variability in the type and dose of antioxidant used.

Meta-analyses suggest that while certain antioxidants might exert modest benefits, the evidence is not robust enough to recommend generalized antioxidant supplementation for metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, large-scale studies have failed to show consistent improvements in clinical outcomes, and in some cases, high-dose antioxidant supplementation has been associated with adverse effects. Thus, while the use of antioxidants for metabolic syndrome is grounded in scientific rationale and some supporting evidence, the overall strength of evidence is moderate at best and not conclusive. Guidelines generally recommend a balanced diet rich in natural antioxidants from fruits and vegetables rather than supplementation with unspecified or synthetic antioxidants.
