Blakeslea trispora is a fungus primarily recognized for its industrial production of carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene and lycopene. Its connection to metabolic syndrome is based on the bioactive compounds it produces, notably lycopene. Several animal studies have investigated the effects of lycopene-rich extracts from Blakeslea trispora on metabolic syndrome parameters, including obesity, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and oxidative stress. For instance, research published in peer-reviewed journals has shown that supplementation with Blakeslea trispora-derived lycopene in high-fat diet-induced rodent models can result in improved lipid profiles, reduced oxidative stress markers, and amelioration of insulin resistance. These effects are generally attributed to lycopene’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

However, direct clinical evidence in humans using whole Blakeslea trispora or its extracts for metabolic syndrome is limited. Most of the supportive data comes from preclinical (animal or cell culture) studies, and it is not yet clear if these findings fully translate to humans.
