Brown seaweed, particularly species such as Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus, has been investigated for its potential benefits in supporting metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. The purported effects are mainly attributed to bioactive compounds found in brown seaweed, such as fucoxanthin, alginates, and polyphenols.

Several preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) have shown that fucoxanthin may improve lipid metabolism, reduce body weight, and enhance insulin sensitivity. A small number of human clinical trials suggest that brown seaweed extracts may help lower postprandial blood glucose and improve cholesterol profiles, possibly due to inhibition of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes and delayed glucose absorption. For instance, a few randomized controlled trials have reported modest reductions in blood glucose and cholesterol when brown seaweed extracts are consumed with meals. However, these studies are generally small, short in duration, and sometimes use mixed seaweed preparations, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to brown seaweed or to generalize results.

There is a lack of large, long-term, well-controlled human studies that confirm efficacy and safety for the treatment or support of metabolic syndrome. Thus, while there is some promising early evidence, it is not robust or conclusive at this time. The use of brown seaweed for metabolic syndrome is scientifically plausible but remains under investigation.
