Calanus finmarchicus, a marine copepod, has recently gained attention for its potential health benefits, particularly due to its oil, which is rich in marine omega-3 fatty acids (notably EPA and DHA) as well as wax esters and astaxanthin. While traditional use is not documented, there is a growing body of preclinical and early clinical research exploring its effects on metabolic syndrome and related metabolic parameters.

A few small human studies and animal trials suggest that Calanus oil supplementation may positively influence metabolic health. In rodent models, supplementation has been observed to reduce weight gain and improve glucose tolerance compared to control groups. Mechanistically, these effects are thought to be linked to the unique lipid composition of Calanus oil, which could enhance lipid metabolism and reduce low-grade inflammation commonly associated with metabolic syndrome.

In humans, pilot trials have found modest improvements in selected markers of metabolic syndrome, such as waist circumference and insulin sensitivity, in overweight subjects supplementing with Calanus oil. However, these studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and lack of long-term safety data.

Overall, while the evidence base is growing and shows promise, it remains preliminary. The current use of Calanus finmarchicus oil for metabolic syndrome is supported by early scientific investigation but lacks the robust, large-scale clinical validation required for stronger recommendations.
