Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a fruit native to the Amazon and is renowned for its exceptionally high vitamin C content and various polyphenols. Its use for metabolic syndrome is supported by emerging scientific evidence, though it is not a traditional remedy for this condition. Several preclinical studies have investigated camu camu’s effects on components of metabolic syndrome, such as obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and inflammation. For example, animal studies have demonstrated that camu camu supplementation can reduce weight gain, improve glucose tolerance, decrease serum triglycerides, and lower markers of inflammation in mice fed high-fat diets. These benefits are thought to be due to the fruit’s potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, primarily attributed to its polyphenolic compounds.
Human evidence is still limited. A small randomized controlled trial found that camu camu juice reduced postprandial blood glucose and insulin levels in healthy adults compared to a control drink, suggesting a potential benefit for glucose metabolism. However, there is a lack of large-scale clinical trials directly evaluating camu camu in individuals with metabolic syndrome. Therefore, while the ingredient is not a traditional remedy for metabolic syndrome, there is some preliminary scientific evidence to suggest potential benefits, mostly from animal and pilot human studies. More robust clinical research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this specific use.
