Caterpillar mushroom, also known as Cordyceps sinensis or Ophiocordyceps sinensis, has been traditionally valued in Tibetan and Chinese medicine for a variety of health benefits, including vitality, stamina, and respiratory health. In recent years, its potential to support aspects of metabolic syndrome—such as hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and obesity—has attracted scientific attention.
Several preclinical studies (mostly in rodents) have shown that Cordyceps extracts can improve glucose metabolism, enhance insulin sensitivity, and modulate lipid profiles. The proposed mechanisms include stimulation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), antioxidative effects, and anti-inflammatory actions. For instance, a 2015 study in Phytotherapy Research reported improved glucose tolerance and reduced triglyceride levels in mice supplemented with Cordyceps extract.
However, the evidence in humans is limited. A small number of clinical trials—often with methodological limitations—suggest minor improvements in fasting glucose and lipid levels, but these findings are not robust or consistent. Most studies are small, short-term, and lack rigorous controls. As such, while there is promising laboratory and animal evidence, the clinical support for using caterpillar mushroom to treat or manage metabolic syndrome in humans is weak at present. Further well-designed human trials are needed to establish efficacy and safety.
