Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) is an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid found in fish oils and certain marine organisms, and it is structurally related to the more widely studied eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Interest in DPA for metabolic syndrome is a relatively recent development, driven by its intermediate position in metabolic pathways and its occurrence in diets associated with cardiometabolic benefits. Some preclinical studies and limited human research suggest that DPA may help improve lipid profiles, reduce inflammation, and enhance endothelial function—mechanisms that are relevant in the context of metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and central obesity. However, direct clinical evidence supporting DPA supplementation for the treatment or prevention of metabolic syndrome in humans is currently limited. Most human studies have focused on EPA and DHA, with DPA often grouped together or studied less specifically. A few observational studies and small intervention trials have noted correlations between higher circulating DPA levels and reduced risk of metabolic syndrome components, but these findings are not yet robust or consistent enough to warrant strong recommendations. As a result, the evidence base for DPA in metabolic syndrome can be considered preliminary, with a need for larger, well-controlled clinical trials to confirm its efficacy and establish optimal dosing. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and emerging evidence, the overall support remains moderate to weak at present.
