Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the primary catechin found in green tea, has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating Metabolic Syndrome, a cluster of conditions including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and central obesity. Scientific interest stems from cell, animal, and human studies suggesting that EGCG may exert beneficial effects on components of Metabolic Syndrome.
Mechanistically, EGCG is thought to modulate lipid metabolism, improve insulin sensitivity, and exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Some randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses of green tea or green tea extract supplementation (which contains EGCG) report modest improvements in body weight, waist circumference, and blood lipid profiles. For example, a 2020 meta-analysis in Phytotherapy Research found that green tea catechins can reduce body weight and LDL cholesterol in individuals with Metabolic Syndrome. However, the clinical effects are generally small and sometimes inconsistent.
Most human studies use green tea extracts rather than purified EGCG, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to EGCG. Additionally, the magnitude of benefit is limited, and not all studies demonstrate significant improvement in all parameters of Metabolic Syndrome.
In summary, there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of EGCG or green tea extracts for Metabolic Syndrome, but the overall strength of evidence is modest (rated 2/5), and effects are generally mild. Larger, well-controlled trials are needed to clarify its efficacy and determine clinically meaningful benefits.
