Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the principal polyphenol in green tea and has been studied for its effects on various components of metabolic syndrome, including obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Preclinical studies in cell and animal models have shown that EGCG can modulate lipid metabolism, reduce fat accumulation, improve glucose uptake, and exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Several small-to-moderate sized human clinical trials have reported modest benefits of green tea or EGCG supplementation on body weight, waist circumference, fasting glucose, LDL cholesterol, and blood pressure. For example, a 2013 meta-analysis (Obesity Reviews) found that green tea catechins had a small but significant effect on weight loss and maintenance. Another 2017 meta-analysis (Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases) concluded that EGCG supplementation could improve some metabolic parameters in people with metabolic syndrome, though the effects were often modest and variable.
However, the quality and size of clinical trials varies, and not all studies report positive effects. The heterogeneity in populations, dosages, and study durations makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions. While there is scientific interest and some positive clinical evidence, EGCG is not an established or primary therapy for metabolic syndrome, and its benefits appear to be supportive rather than transformative. Overall, the use of EGCG for metabolic syndrome is justified by scientific investigation with moderate but not definitive human evidence.
