Flax (Linum usitatissimum), particularly in the form of flaxseed, has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting or treating metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions including increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Several clinical trials and meta-analyses have investigated the effects of flaxseed supplementation on metabolic risk factors. Results suggest that flaxseed may help lower blood pressure, improve lipid profiles (reducing total and LDL cholesterol), and improve glycemic control, especially in individuals with metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes. The beneficial effects are attributed primarily to flaxseed's high content of alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid), lignans (phytoestrogens with antioxidant properties), and soluble fiber. However, while the data are promising, the quality and consistency of the evidence vary. Some clinical trials report modest improvements, while others find minimal or no effect. Meta-analyses generally support small but statistically significant improvements in some metabolic parameters with flaxseed supplementation. The evidence is stronger for cholesterol and blood pressure effects, and somewhat less robust for effects on blood sugar and waist circumference. Overall, flaxseed is considered a reasonable adjunct to lifestyle modification in metabolic syndrome, but not a stand-alone therapy. The evidence base is large enough to warrant the rating, but further high-quality, long-term studies are needed to fully establish efficacy and optimal dosing.
