Green coffee, which refers to unroasted coffee beans, is primarily promoted for metabolic syndrome due to its content of chlorogenic acids (CGAs), a group of polyphenolic compounds. Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have examined green coffee extract's effects on components of metabolic syndrome, such as blood glucose, blood pressure, and body weight. Some randomized controlled trials suggest modest benefits in reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and body mass index (BMI) in individuals at risk for or with metabolic syndrome. For example, a 2020 meta-analysis published in Phytotherapy Research reported small, statistically significant reductions in fasting glucose and blood pressure with green coffee extract supplementation compared to placebo. However, the quality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variability in extract standardization and dosages across studies. There is insufficient evidence to conclude that green coffee can comprehensively treat or prevent metabolic syndrome, and most trials focus on surrogate endpoints rather than hard outcomes. Larger, longer-term, and better-designed studies are needed. While green coffee is not rooted in traditional medicine specifically for metabolic syndrome, its use is justified by early scientific research, not by long-standing traditional practices.
