Isomaltooligosaccharide (IMO) is a prebiotic dietary fiber that has been investigated for its effects on metabolic health, including potential roles in managing components of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), such as elevated blood glucose, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. The scientific evidence supporting its use is modest and primarily comes from animal studies and a limited number of human trials. Several studies have shown that IMO supplementation can modulate the gut microbiota, increasing beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium, which may confer metabolic benefits. In animal models, IMO has been shown to reduce fasting blood glucose, improve insulin sensitivity, and positively affect lipid metabolism. However, human data are less robust. A handful of small clinical trials have reported mild improvements in glycemic control or lipid profiles with IMO supplementation, but these effects are generally modest and sometimes inconsistent.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of prebiotic fibers (including IMO) suggest potential for modest improvements in certain MetS parameters, but IMO-specific evidence is still emerging, and more rigorous, large-scale human studies are needed to confirm these findings and determine clinical relevance. In summary, while there is some scientific validation for the use of IMO in MetS, the evidence is currently limited and does not yet support strong clinical recommendations.
