Evidence supporting the use of: Ketone (unspecified)
For the health condition: Metabolic Syndrome
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ketones, specifically exogenous ketones such as beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), have been investigated for their potential role in supporting or treating metabolic syndrome. The scientific rationale stems from the effects of ketogenic diets, which induce endogenous ketone production and have been shown to improve markers of metabolic syndrome such as insulin sensitivity, blood glucose, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol. Some studies suggest that exogenous ketone supplements can mimic certain metabolic effects of a ketogenic state without carbohydrate restriction. For example, small clinical trials and animal studies have demonstrated that ketone supplementation can acutely lower blood glucose and improve insulin response. Moreover, ketones may have anti-inflammatory and appetite-suppressing properties, both relevant to metabolic syndrome. However, the evidence is still emerging, with most studies being short-term, small-scale, or preclinical. There is a lack of large, long-term randomized controlled trials directly assessing the impact of exogenous ketone supplementation on all aspects of metabolic syndrome in humans. The use of ketones for this purpose is thus supported by a moderate amount of scientific evidence, but more robust clinical data are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Historically, ketones as supplements do not have a tradition of use for metabolic syndrome prior to the 21st century, as their development is recent and based on modern scientific investigation.
